You may be right, but I have used them 300mm and 600mm IS
lenses on a tripod as well as my 100-400mm IS and not a problem.
Maybe I was lucky.  BTW, have you experienced this well known
floating image yourself?  I have also used the 28-135mm IS
on a tripod with slow shutter speeds and the results were 
perfect.
