The incident I'm about to tell happened way back in 1996 but the problems I had with UPS lasted until 2000. In 1996 I ordered some new Canon FD gear that was no longer available in Europe but was still in B&H's stock, which was sent through UPS. I received the package, signed the receipt and paid for customs and handling charges (quite expensive BTW). I usually keep receipts for 1 year and then toss them away. In 1998, 2 1/2 years later, I received a letter from UPS claiming that I owed them the custom and handling charges of my 1996 package! I contacted them and they said that I would have to present proof of payment. I argued that no one keeps receipts for that long and besides, if they had delivered the package it meant that it had been paid for. They argued that "sometimes we deliverer the package and the costumer pays for it later.". I told them that that was their problem and that I had no intention of paying something that I had already paid for. Furthermore, they should have contacted me sooner. "Only now did we found out these situations". For two years more, they kept sending letters requesting payment until they quit in 2000. I later found out that due to their policy of "deliver now and pay latter" other costumers had the exact some problems I had. I wouldn't be surprised that some people within UPS took advantage of this lack of control to keep the money for themselves and never give it to UPS. It is unacceptable that a company as large as UPS has, or at least had, such a poor organization and control. Never did I do business with UPS again. If there are no other shipping methods other than UPS, I just buy elsewhere.
