Also, take the old battery out. Leave it out overnight. The next morning, drive to a photo store and get a brand new battery and try putting it in.
Leaving the battery out overnight seems to reset some settings. And the battery you have in it may be running low because the camera never turned itself off properly. To be safe, reset the camera and get a new battery.
