The truth is out there, no, you are not alone. I have to say that of the best protraitures I've taken, all of them are done with the built-in auto flash reduction. I generally set the camera for manual exposure (1/200 sec shutter speed, and aperature to suit film speed and ambient lighting condition) in these situation but I almost always leave the flash on full-auto !
