Tim,

The bottom line is for "correct" colours the camera should be white
balanced. Film is no different in this respect, although the method of
achieving it is.

In practice this is not always possible and IME sometimes not desirable.

I regard the CT presets the same as all the other controls. I only use AWB,
CWB and KB. I don't use any others in the same way as I don't use green
square mode or have the beeper on. But I appreciate that others work
differently. I guess the manufacturers do too and thus there are other
options.

By the sound of it, you are not experiencing any major problems. QED.
