If you take considerable care and make adequate preparations I see no reason
why you cannot take your camera equipment with you.

Several American "outdoors" catalog companies used to carry totally
sealable, waterproof bags designed for exactly the situation you are
planning to undertake. If you go online and check Cabellas, Orvis, REI, and
similar outfitters I'll bet they still have them.

I highly recommend adding silica gel packets to your shopping list. These
are the little packets that are shipped with electronics and many kinds of
photo equipment. It is an excellent desiccant that can be dried out in
sunlight and reused. Some pharmaceutical suppliers and laboratory equipment
companies carry it in small bulk lots. I have also seen it packaged in a
metallic container and sold on E-bay as a camera accessory. I believe large
photographic suppliers also list it.

Another item that few nature photographers "forget" is a small towel. In
fact, I carry several cloth hand towels with me on most trips. I have used
them extensively at sporting events; they are kept at the ready tucked under
my belt. They are handy to pack camera equipment in, and are a great
(immediate) way of drying errant splashes or raindrops. What a great thing
accessory for covering my balding pate in marvelous sunlight. They readily
dry in sunlight as well.

Work the net and you'll find everything you need.

The best of luck on your adventure.
