Not with the 17-40L lens (since I don't own one) but I find the
degree of sharpening necessary does vary with the lens. My
20-35/2.8L needs less sharpening than the 28-135/3.5 but more
than either the 50/1.4 or 100/2 to produce images to my
satisfaction.
It sounds like you've got an excellent copy of the 17-40L, though.
The aperture used (and other variables, such as tripod use)
has an effect but the difference between the lenses is noticeable
at 100% zoom. However it's not noticeable in prints at any of
the sizes I've done so far!
