I don't have the 17-40L, but... Canon claim to have used special coating on the 17-40L - whatever that means! It could be that your images are a little more contrasty, and this is what you're noticing. Have you tried using USM settings (in PS) of 30, 60, 0 to crispen up images taken in slight haze or on a dull day? I normally use something like 100-200, 0.5, 0 as a final sharpener just before printing. I took quite a few images close to the sea on a stinking hot day last July, and haze was a problem, but nicely sorted using the 30,60,0 routine.
