example isn't up to snuff? I have seen results pretty darned good from
it.

The 28-135 is certainly a fine lens - for a consumer zoom. When used stopped down a bit it is capable of very good results. It is no L zoom or prime lens, though. And a 10D with it's small sensor is a challenge to every lens designed for 35mm format.
