Ken: Like Chip, I am extremely happy with my Polaroid SS 4000. I don't believe either it or the 4000+ are currently being produced, but I believe that Microtek's version was nearly identical to Polaroid's.
I recommend checking out Vuescan from <http://hamrick.com/>. I ran some head-to-head tests and I got a lot better shadow detail from Vuescan than from the supplied software. Examples of my scans are available at <http://canid.com/>. The trial version is mostly functional...enough so that you can see if it will make a difference.
