One comment on this.  I wouldn't EVER convert to jpeg
until you're absolutely certain you're done
manipulating the file.  And then I only make a jpeg
copy.

Leave your original and working file in something that
uses no compression, or lossless compression.  Every
time you open a jpeg, it is decompressed. But the
information lost during the compression process can't
be recovered.  The algorithm simply makes its best
guess as to what the missing information was.

Then when you save, the algorithm compresses it all
over again.  Do enough save / open / save cycles, and
the degredation in image quality will be noticeable.
