You want to make sure that the beam of the flash fills the entire umbrella that way you will get the softest light as is your goal.

I'd make sure that none of the light spilled past the edges (so you would see a rectangle illuminated in the center of the near-circle umbrella).

My guess is that you will need to use one of the widest settings to achieve this.
