I use this exact set-up (36" dia. umbrella) as much as I can for portrait, I
set the flash on auto but set the camera settings manually.

24 mm setting is what I use always on the 550EX, you want to diffuse the
light when you use the umbrella (or "brolle" for Malcolm), don't you?  I
suspect the 105mm setting may make the light more harsh again.

I do find the umbrella soaks up a lot of light, the one I use does allow
some light to transmit through the material which does not help to use the
light 100% efficiently.

Even with the light output reduction, I do like the effect the set up
provides which is very pleasant.
