Hi all,

-----Original Message-----

I've got two 550EX flash units that I would like to use as
[...]
shoe adapter
and when one flash fires the Wein optical slave will fire the
connected
flash.
What am I missing? I'm sure it's obvious but I don't know.

Hi!

You don't even need Wein optical slaves. 550EX can be optical slave by
itself. What you want to do is put you 550EX in manual slave mode. (not
E-ttl slave mode) Set the power, zoom, put it on tripod or something and
you are done. When a flash (your Alien bees, or your on-camera flash)

Miha,

I didn't think this was possible and I can't get at the instruction manual
at the moment. Please explain how to put the 550EX in to "manual slave mode"

[...]
I've had a chance to read the instruction book again and try this. I can't
find any combination of CFs or settings to make the 550EX work as described
by Miha.

What am I missing?

I think there're two concepts mixed here:
one: 550EX as manual slave (possible with wireless communication)
two: 550EX as standalone **optical** slave (NOT POSSIBLE)

For case 1, you need a master flash (either a 550ex or a ST-E2) and you set the other 550EX as a slave by sliding the selector to 'slave' and pushing on the 'mode' button for two seconds. Then you can input the manual output that you desire. Note that with a 550EX as master, you can just set the master to 'manual' mode and make use of the ratio function to change the output of your slave.

I think that Case 2 is just a feature mix-up with the Sigma EF-500 Super (that Miha has/had), which *is* able to act as a 'dumb' optical slave by itself.
BTW: with peanuts triggers, it's enough to turn the flash on-off-on to make the next shot (no need to remove/install again as reported) although it's a real PAIN in the...

Gerard.
