Sure the G5 is nice, but you can't put on nice EF lenses :-)

You're better off letting them put it through their cut machine, way
less handling. You don't say what you're shooting with, but slide film
does not allow for mistakes and can be a very costly learning
experience. Besides, with a cheap scanner it's difficult to get a
decent scan.

As to your streaking, it's not uncommon in roller transport
processors. You will have to examine, perhaps try and clean the negs
to know if it's scratching or crud. Check blank pieces to see if it is
there.

You should have bought the 10d. Yes, it's more money now, but you
wouldn't have to buy film anymore. Plus you'd learn quickly about
exposure. And you'd have a lot more control and options. I figure I've
definitely paid for mine over the past year with lack of film and
processing costs, not to mention the cost of a really good scanner.
