Hi All, I'm considering the purchase of a 300 f2.8, but my budget does not come close to a Canon L (even a used one). In fact my budget for this only stretches to a used 3rd party lens.
The disadvantages of the 3rd party lenses seem to be that they don't have IS and may have incompatibilities with my 10D (depending on their age) and indeed any lens now *may* be incompatible with future models. Does anyone have experience with the Tamron, Tokina and Sigma EX 300/2.8s? What are they like optically and for focus speed and accuracy? Any preference for one of these three brands over the others in this range? Any knowledge of past incompatibilities with current EOS bodies? Please don't tell me to save up and buy a Canon. *ALL* of my other lenses are Canon, including several L lenses. My usage for a lens like this simply cannot justify spending the $ needed to get a Canon lens. Besides a dead man can't use a lens no matter how nice it is [my wife would kill me!!]. :) A used 3rd Party lens is it. I live in Australia and while I've seen quite a few used 300/f4 lenses for sale, I've rarely seen a used 300/f2.8. The easiest source for them is eBay, but prices for used Canons are so high you may as well buy new. The independents at least seem affordable. Any feedback will be welcome!
