Not being presumptive, but IMHO, the TCs have glass
elements in them. Any glass other than what is already
inside the lens *will* degrade quality to a degree
(more so with TCs and even more so with 2X than with
1.4X). 

Hence, one needs to start out with a lens which has a
very high quality of output so that the TCs
degradation does not affect the final output by much. 

Knowing the above, and the fact that 70-300 IS is not
exactly a stellar player in that field to begin with,
at least I can agree to what Ken said (even though I
do not have the 70-300).
