I used to shoot with Tokina 28-70/2.6-2.8 ATX PRO II for Minolta is
soem past prior to converting to Canon.
I hadn't owned the other fast pro glass in this range, so used to
consider the Tokina as good as constant f/2.8 pro glass can deliver,
however, once revealed to my horror (shot the trip without my usual
high quality UV filter that I forgot to mount after clens cleaning) the
very high level of bluish cast produced by the lens. I was having hard
time processing 8 rolls of slides to get rid of that cast, punch up the
contrast that has been eaten up by that in PS.
Later I conducted a tests on color rendtion for all of my 4 leneses
(two Tokina, 1 Sigma and 1 Minolta) using well controlled lighting
condition
(a specail gretag lighting box with precisely controlled lighting
temperature inside) - this Tokina ended up having the strongest and
very noticeable cool renditon that required a good UV or Skylight to
correct.
Besides, apparently due to this reason the apparent contrast was
lacking.
As about sharpness, wide open it produced soft results, though about
1.5 - 2 stops down it became good, though nothing spectacular. My old
Minolta 28-85/3.5-4.5 produced noticeably better results on slides in
all aspects.
One thing this lens stands for - the build quality is Tkina's standard
one - apparently able to withstand a serious abuse, a war-prepared
usage.
I only realized to shall to be expecetd from a real professional glass
of this type once jumped off for Canon and acquired Canon 28-70/2.8L.
It just blew Tokina out of the water - I never realized prior to that
that I can expect so clear, razor sharp and contrasty slides.
Regards, Alex
