No, Tokina's webpage lists both a new 28-70 and a 28-80. The latter is
a Pro lens which is real nice but high priced, with LD glass etc. The
former is lighter and cheaper. PhotoDo only rates the older f2.6-f2.8
28-70 at 3.1, so no real comparisons there.

The constant aperture lenses are new Tokina designs... the variable 2.6-2.8 (AT-X Pro, AT-X Pro II) are licensed copies of the old Angieneux design. I have the 28-70 AT-X Pro II, and it's a heckuva lens optically, no complaints at all there. I don't put a whole lot of stock in lens tests.

I'm not sure what the origin of the original AT-X lens is, the one with the tapered barrel.

The mechanism ("focus clutch") for switching to MF on the old AT-X Pro/Pro II is a little awkward, you have to flip an AF-MF switch and then rotate the focus collar until the clutch engages and pull back. Once it's in MF though, the feel is as good as any manual focus Nikkor... which is to say, really good. The feel of the zoom collar is the same.
