I have to spend 1-2 days in Anchorage, Alaska next week. I will not have a car. I will be staying (not my choice) at the Clarion Suites Hotel on W. 8th Ave.
Any ideas for a tourist, given the brevity of my stay? TIA.
There isn't too much downtown. There's Resolution Park where you might get some nice sunsets - let's see, around midnight. I have a nice sunset shot hanging in my house from that spot. There's the ConocoPhillips building - tallest in the state - where I used to work. Not very exciting for photography though. Walking downtown really limits you. You could go down by the river and maybe catch some people fishing - but it's not scenic there. If you really stay on foot you could walk the coastal trail. It's a pleasant walk. Moose are common there so you could catch some wildlife.
Really, you should rent a car - even for a few hours. There's enough daylight that it's worth it even if you start late. Drive south out of town - there's only one road. There is fabulous scenery along Turnagin arm (named because they kept having to Turn - around - again). There's a good chance to see some wildlife, maybe some eagles on the mud flats. If you just drive around town and a bit into the hills it's not too hard to find moose as subjects.
