I can only give you my experience.  I bought a Canon
G3 for the same reasons you're consider a P&S.  It has
full manual control, TV and AV as well as program,
takes EX flashes and uses the same batteries and
memory cards as the 10d.  Image quality, for a P%S
with a tiny sensor, is pretty darn good.

But it just didn't meet my needs.  I had it less than
a year when I bought my 10d.  The control layout is
wierd, and I can never remember how infrequently used
functions work. I don't like composing using the LCD
screen, and the viewfinder coesn't even come close to
providing accurate framing. For someone who's used to
using an SLR, it just seems very limiting.

I'm considering selling it and buying a small,
pocketable digital P&S to have something that will fit
in a pocket, but it will probably be even less capable
than the G3.
