The real answer is that *some* Sigma lenses have had
problems on some EOS bodies. Canon has done a very
good job, whether intentional or not, of changing the
details of the communications protocol between lens
and body so that older Canon lenses continue to work
on new bodies, but older Sigma lenses don't.
Every current Sigma lens will work fine on a 10d, 1d
II, or any other current body. What there's no way to
know is whether they will work correctly on the 20d.
Sigma has, however, been very good at upgrading recent
lens to work with new Canon bodies when Canon "breaks"
them. Were you to buy a Sigma lens today, and find it
doesn't work on a 20d, you can be pretty confident
that Sigma will fix it for you.
I'm not sure the lenses are really that comparable
though. What you really need to think about is your
priorities: A fast f2.8 lens vs. a slow lens with IS.
Speed vs. focal length range. And, of course, optical
performance, which we can't answer yet.
Personally, I'd be torn. I like the longer telephoto
range of the Canon lens, but on a recent trip to Japan
I got a lot of shots indoors with a 17-35 2.8 that
would have been difficult with a slower lens. What I
really want is an 18-70 2.8-4.0. I'd pay serious money
for that an L quality lens of that spec.
