I agree with Malcom, get used to digital stuff as many time in advance to Oct 9 as you can. I've found flash to be a difficult issue with digital (10D) and RAW: white balance is critical! For me digital is a non-return path, but it has some hurdles in the way.
The 10D battery lasts for 100-200 shots. I've not tried alternative batteries (there're several compatible, more energy capable and less expensive ones). There're some very expensive and fast 1GB and 2GB CF cards from Lexar; but depending on shooting style the internal 10D buffer can be enough and you can use some slower devices.
