Pattie, I took my 10D with me to Namibia a couple of months ago. One day I climbed a couple of sand dunes while the wind was blowing and I found out that my 10D wasn't as 'weather sealed' as my good old EOS3. Some sand got stuck behind the dial on the back of the camera. Fortunately enough for me I was able to remove it using a small brush. Other than that everything went smoothly. I went to Etosha National Park for a couple of days and I was (very) worried about dust getting on the sensor. Etosha is known for its wildlife but also for the very fine dust. I was worried that the dust would become a problem while changing lenses, but had no problems whatsoever.
Good luck on your tour in Iraq. I guess you should have joined the Dutch army though, we only have to do 4-month tours.
