If you know you are not going to focus closer then 3m then the lens can focus much quicker when it hunts, i.e. goes back to closest focusing distance and then back again. Turn the focusing ring from 1.5m to 3m and then from 3m to infinity and you will recognize that the travel for both is about the same.
