FWIW, I have an Epson 3170 (not as great as the 4870 by specs) but I get some pretty darn good results for it. So much so that I disconnected my Canon FS 2710 dedicated film scanner, as I rarely use film, and for the occasional times I do the 3170 is usually good enough. With that being said, if the New Canon has finer resolutions and the infrared scratch/dust detections works as advertised, I'd give the new Canon a try.
4800 dpi achieved by two interpolated 2400 dpi CCDs.
ICE-like functionality (infrared cleaning)l.
