It actually void warranty, you are right.
But some people have had problem with it and their camera turned to be impossible to turn on, just because they were trying to upgrade the firmware to the hacked one and something went wrong or for other reasons (bended pins, etc.) and, since they were in warranty, canon fixed them for free, without even notice that the firmware wasn't the original one.
I also strongly believe that canon isn't at all against the hacked firmware, since it has attracted a lot of people who were choosing between the 300D and the nikon d70. If you search in the forums many people have asked/are asking what to purchase between the two possibility 301D (300D + hacked FW) or D70.

Why don't you upgrade your firmware? The russian/hacked one has:
3200 Iso, FEC, Mirror Lock up and other nice features...
