Thys, I think the "missing link" that will clear up most of your question is probably the Bogen Umbrella Swivel Adapter. It attaches easily to whatever lightstand you choose and you can attach the 550EX Mini Stand to the adapter and slip the flash into the Mini Stand. The adapter is pretty versatile, allowing you to swivel and tilt the umbrella as well as move the umbrella in and out from the flash. I'm sure there are other versions of the umbrella swivel adapter, too (whether made by Bogen or other companies).
