profit anyway, but for showing the know-how of a manufacturer.

Same with their 50mm F1.0L which was large, expensive and was the direct
competitor with the Noctilux in terms of focal length and speed but the
Noctilux was sharper, whereas the Canon 85mm F1.2 was sharper than both
the Noctilux and the 75mm F1.4 Summilux which really used to burn the
Leica zealots.
