Why do old Canon lenses work and not Sigma? Did Sigma not design to Canon's
specs? Did Sigma have to guess what the specs were and guessed wrong.

Correct, Sigma does not want to pay Canon for the use of their mount so they
reverse engineer the mount so they can get their lenses to work. At least
that's the story I've heard ...

This is part of the reason why Sigma lenses are cheaper ... er, less
expensive.

Now, the big question is why they don't continue to work? Older Canon lenses
work on newer bodies. That older Sigma lenses don't work on newer bodies is
strange. The only thing I can think of is that their reverse engineers don't
ever get it quite right.
