When I started out in this hobby, the prices of gear
was very daunting. Heck, my first body, the Elan IIe
was still going for more than $400, which was a large
some for me on a luxury "hobby" expenditure! So third
party glass was more the norm than the exception, but
I attempted to acquire that glass selectively and
patiently.

My life situation has changed somewhat and I've also
gotten rather used to the high prices of photo
equipment, but I still retain all my original
(cheaper) third-party glass.

One of those lenses was a new-old-stock Sigma 90/2.8
macro, which has a 4.2 Photodo rating. A wonderful
metal-bodied lens with a focus motor that could wake
up the dead! (Luckily I use it mainly in manual
focus.) I had it re-chipped shortly after receiving
it, and not because I needed to, but for whatever
reason Sigma was offering free re-chipping on this
particular lens. (I think it may have been because of
the release of the then new Eos 3.) Anyway, it works
flawlessly with my 20D.

If I ever have to replace it because it won't work
with the (future) 50D, then I'll know that I certainly
got more than my money's worth out of it, and the
majority of that value is having a macro lens to use
at all vs not having one 'cuz I couldn't afford it.
