Older pro-flashes like Metz, Honeywell and Graflex (their electronic flash not the classic bulb flashes) all had a square (round) pattern for just this reason (and to cover square format pro cameras like Hasselblad).

You are using the wrong flash for the job. The Canon flashes are very tightly integrated to the 35mm format (OK for digital the 2:3 aspect ratio format). Zooming to match your lens focal-length, etc. For this reason (and to maximize the light/guide number (as mentioned in another posting)) the coverage needs to be rectangular.

You need a different flash, like a Quantum Q-Flash or a Lumedyne. They'd give you square (round) coverage that will handle your rotating camera.
