Steve, I shoot with my EOS-3 and 550EX on bracket that also preserve
horizontal flash head orientaiton even with vertical camera position,
but never noticed any issue with flash coverage. I shoot both "naked"
flash and with bouncer (Omni-bounce) - no problems whatsoever. I use
bracket for any more then just family snapshots (not to mention offical
events like weddings, corporate and others), so such issue wouldn't be
left unnoticed would it take place.
Cannot really guess what caused it in you situation.. :-(
