I can't believe no one has caught the obvious:  Your
"custom bracket" was not designed for 35mm gear (or
was just poorly designed).  I have a stroboframe Pro-T
bracket that flips the flash so that it stays above
the camera for both vertical and horizontal shots. It
ALSO maintains proper orientation between the flash
and camera, so the long axis of the flash coverage
always corresponds to the long axis of the film frame.

I'm sure there are other brackets that accomplish the
same thing. 

If you still can, return that bracket and find one
that works properly.  Otherwise, sell it on ebay, or
buy new flash gear.
