To *me*, the problem is obvious, as it was to me when I first
encountered it. As Boy Meyer wrote, the flash just needs to be in the
same orientation as the camera... my conclusion exactly. Horizontal
camera, horizontal flash... vertical camera, vertical flash. Simple and
ends the problem 100%. The Stroboframe addresses this problem, the
Custom Bracket does not. It's great that some other's can flip their
camera and not the flash and it work ok, but there are so many
combinations of flash, camera, lens, etc., that what works for one
set-up may not necessarily work for another.

I have used a Stroboframe Pro T with the same arrangement and I lips the
flash not the camera, and DO NOT get results as you indicate. Have used
that bracket for years, not a problem.
If you can borrow another EOS camera, even a film one, see if the issue
remains. I would venture to guess that your 1D may be out of sorts. Just
my opinion.

The flash has only discrete settings regarding flash coverage. So if you use
a focal length that is a bit shorter then the upper limit of one of these
discrete settings you might be fine.

As a concrete example assume that one of the flash's settings covers a focal
range of 70mm-105mm (I think that is what my 540 is doing). Now if the
orientation of the flash and camera does not match then this range is
reduced at the lower end, for example to 85-105mm. So if you use a focal
length of 85-105mm you will be fine but if you use a focal length from
70-85mm you will see a light fall off. Similarly, assuming that the highest
setting is for the range from 105-135(and beyond) then you probably will be
fine with any focal length longer then about 120mm. Maybe this is the
discrepancy between the two statements above. Just some idea.

Robert
