Just like other shooter mentioned here, I also found ECF on my EOS-3 to
be useless once trying to utilize it for entire 45 points array.
However engaging an appropriate CF to limit to 11 sensors raised the
success rate of ECF considerably.
Having said that, I still shoot with my EOS-3 (my primary cam, haven't
yet switched to digital) and have never acquired enough confidence to
trust ECF for any improtant work. In most cases I just turn it off and
use mostly manual AF sensor control. The reason for such can be tha
fact that I wear glasses which certainly impacts ECF performance.
A friend of mine (Minolta user) who is lucky enough to enjoy much
better eyesight, doesn't wear glasses and once callibrated for him, ECF
on my EOS-3 worked great deal better in his case, close to 90-95% of
hit rate.
Regards, Alex
