Wouldn't the exposure be a function of how the camera senses and controls
the light?  Are you also sure you are using the EXACT same focus point?
that's where the light metering is done so if you were just a little off and
the focus point is a lighter shade than the next, then it would explain the
exposure difference.  The only way to be sure if your 550EX is mis-behaving
is to mount the camera/flash on a tripod and take multiple shot of the same
subject under the same ambient lighting condition.

I bought a 580EX only because I needed a second flash on top of the existing
550EX, it's been very good, it's slightly smaller in size, the tilt/swivel
head is much easier to use, setting changes using the rotary dial is more
intuitive, although the only minor pain for me is to remember how to make
certain changes on different flashes.
