I used to keep filters over the front elements for protection. Now I
don't - I've decided that since I've paid hard-earned money to get decent
glass, why would I put extra glass in front of it for no reason other
than 'protection' when I am not accident-prone (never dropped a lens or a
camera, ever). Extra glass means extra light bouncing around in terms of
diffraction. I have on lens that is impossible to cover with a filter,
and that has a huge bulbous front element. So the rest lost their filters
in sympathy :-)
