EOS short roll?

First time I ever had this happen:  I loaded a roll of 36 exposure film in 
my 7e, and it rewound when it hit 24. Was a short roll loaded in the wrong 
cassette? Could it be miscoded in some way? Or could it be camera error? 
Haven't gotten it developed yet, I guess that'll answer my questions. Anyone 
else ever seen this?
