If there was dirt or oil blocking either the DX contacts on the camera or the film cassette it could have registered the shorter film length when the cassette was loaded. Did you happen to see how long the camera thought the roll was when you loaded it?

First time I ever had this happen: I loaded a roll of 36 exposure film in my 7e, and it rewound when it hit 24. Was a short roll loaded in the wrong cassette? Could it be miscoded in some way? Or could it be camera error? Haven't gotten it developed yet, I guess that'll answer my questions. Anyone else ever seen this?
