I think Jim has brought up one of the main RAW vs. JPEG elements. *HOW*
you do your RAW conversion can make all the difference in the world. I
also use CAPTURE ONE for RAW conversion. (I only shoot RAW... NEVER
JPEG). There is absolutely NO comparison between the Capture One
program and the Canon supplied software, or any others I have tried for
that matter. I agree with the fact that not having to worry about white
balance or precise exposure frees me up to SHOOT instead of having to
fiddle with the camera. In my opinion RAW is the BEST thing to ever
happen to digital. I can't believe that anyone who has shot RAW and
used Capture One for conversion could ever shot JPEG again. Why would I
want to tie up card space with multiple JPEG bracketed exposures and
hopefully one of them will be about right..... or .... I can shot ONE
RAW and 99% of the time I can quickly and easily make it PERFECT later
when I have plenty of time to think and work with it.
I shoot lots of fundraiser parties in large areas that are often in
almost total darkness. Without the ability to shoot RAW and make
adjustments later, my life would be much harder!
This discussion always comes up at times, and everyone has their own
opinion. It all depends on what works best for YOU, but I always feel
many of the JPEG proponents have never really given RAW a real try WITH
the Capture One conversion program. If *I* had to use Canon's software,
(which I have tried), I would probably shoot JPEGs too.
Oh... one other advantage of the Capture One program... it KILLS
digital noise. I have had to shoot many times at 1200 ISO, (1Ds), and
the software wipes out the noise at nothing more than the default
automatic noise reduction setting.
OK.... that's *my* take on the issue! :-)
