Hi Tom,

I used to shoot motorsports and have used all three of the EF 600 4L lenses.
The EF 600 4L IS effectively is the sharpest of the three when hand held.
>From a monopod or tripod the EF 600 4L IS and EF 600 4L series II lenses are
very much the same which leaves the series I lens EF 600 4L behind in terms
of sharpness and contrast. This is NOT to say that the EF 600 4L series I
lens is a bad lens as the differences are small and there is more to be
gained from technique than the absolute difference in sharpness. Being
digital I can fix the contrast of the series I lenses so IMO it's a wash in
that respect. The later series II lenses as I recall are also a couple of
pounds lighter (and more fragile), compared to the series I EF 600 4L but I
almost always used them from a monopod for sports anyway.

HTH

Cheers/Chip
