Hi, I am new on list. I know Cotty from another photography mailing list. I am not really sure of the etiquette on this list. And I can't figure out if it is a moderated. The FAQ links were broken, including the google archived FAQ. So bear with me...
My name is Marnie and I often go by the handle Doe so I usually sign with Marnie aka Doe. I am a woman, older, in my fifties, and live in California. have only been doing photography about 5 years. I started with a Pentax film camera, anyway, to make a long story short I now have a 300D. Which I am content with for now. Previously, over about three years, I took about 4 photography classes (adult ed), and although I turn out a good picture now and then I still consider myself a pretty rank amateur. :-) I am not a gear freak, the technical side of photography is not my forte -- I am more into images. So I am clueless about a lot of things and like to ask questions when appropriate. And maybe even when not. Since switching to Canon (I started with the Elan) I've been slowly but surely building up my lenses so I have a better kit. I now have three Canon lenses and two Tamrons. Okay, that brings me to my question... A couple months ago I purchased the 70-200 4 L used from Adorama. Excellent condition. Unfortunately because of rain I've only given a few test runs. I can't seem to handhold it very well, so I debating selling it and buying the new 70-300 4-5/6 IS USM. I almost bought it instead of the 70-200, but at that point there weren't that many reviews of the new 70-300 and a friend nagged me that I couldn't shoot well without IS. :-) At this point, fredmiranda.com reviews the 70-300 at 9.2 and the 70-200 at 9.5. I am wondering if someone has used both? How is the image quality of the 70-300? If there isn't a huge difference in quality, do you feel the IS makes up for it? Well, I think you get the drift, like I said I am wondering if I'd be happier with the 70-300. Wish I could afford both, but right now that is not an option. Any input would be helpful.
