Michael,

The Unsharpen Mask Ken mentioned works well, however the amount of
sharpening depends on how big the image is at the time of final viewing on
monitor, you pretty much have go through some trial and error to figure out
what you like the most.

As for the image straight from the 1D Mk 2 being soft, it was also my
biggest "complaint" when I first got the camera, but I quickly found out
there is a valid reason for it, i.e. there is an anti-aliaising glass filter
in front of the image sensor to purposely soften the square pixel corners of
diagonal image details such that you don't see the "staircase" (aliasing)
effect, as a result one must sharpen the image after the shot is taken
especially if all in-camera parameters are at their minimum setting.

You "could" bump up the sharpening parameter in the camera a bit, but be
forewarned that it's infinitely easier to sharpen a soft image afterwards
than to soften an image that has been sharpened too much from the in-camera
processing.
