I have been a member of this list for about 5 minutes....literally. Anyway,
I would like to ask the age old question (sorry if it's been over done) if
opting for the image stabilization feature on the 70-200L is worth and extra
$700. I am looking at "like new", non IS 70-200 L's on Ebay for $900 so I am
having a difficult time justifying such a high price tag for the IS. Let's
face it $700 is a nice chunk of $ towards another lens! Suggestions and
feedback would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

I once sat contorted for several weeks pondering the same thing.

With dire consequences, I went for the IS version.

I am so glad I made the right decision.

Thing is, if I had decided the other way, I wouldn't have known any
different, and so probably would have been just as happy........until I
would have tried someone's IS version....and had the largest dose of
regret on record.

Try before you buy, but buy the IS version. It's worth every single penny.

As far as I'm concerned, IS is the single most significant development in photographic equipment since the instant return mirror, and possibly even before. Metering, motor drives and autofocus don't come close. Since then, digital may, but IS is huge.

The 100-400 and 28-135 were the first two lenses I got for the EOS system after a good deal on a used 24TSE got me into the system after many years with Nikons.

I would never consider getting a non-IS version of a lens if IS were available.

I posted this before, I believe, but the shot is (cropped) with the 100-400 with 1.4 converter, on Provia in an EOS3 wide open at 1/8sec; I was standing in a field under the tree and had no support except my legs:

It's a Vermilion Flycatcher, and I only saw one, and got off about 5 shots at dusk. It's an extreme example, but I've never got as sharp a picture with a 400 at 1/30sec, let along an effective 560mm at 1/8sec.
