I'd suggest the Sigma 70-300, the macro is ok (and fun to use) and you
can't help but like the warranty. I had one cease to auto-focus and
had it fixed within a few weeks no charge, 4 years after buying it.
I now have the Canon 75-300 and it isn't any better, I only kept it
because the Sigma was sold with a Rebel XS.
The 75-300 tends to be frowned upon -but some tests rate it pretty well
(good value for the money)
Personally I'd avoid the 55-200 EF-S, if your buddy ever moves to a
full frame camera it won't work.

I have no idea about consumer tele-zooms but would I be right in
thinking that the 28-135mm f3.4-4 IS would be a good start for him? The
only thing I could recommend unequivocally was IS.
Recommendations please for his first telephoto lens (he likes the idea
of a zoom, and to be fair I think a prime would scare him - he might
think it was broken ;-))
TIA
