An understandable thought, but he's not that sort of person, and further, the
pieces of cardboard that were presumably glued together show not even the
slightest hint of tearing, as you'd expect if they were forced apart.  Really,
you wouldn't guess looking at them that they were ever stuck together at all!
At first, I thought that the slight curled-over lip of the black leather(?)
that is wrapped around the case was all that had held the bottom on (I think
that it is in fact all that held the outer black piece on), but that would be
even more insane, and in any case, there is a pattern of (now inert) residue on
the bottom piece that I imagine provided some stick when it was originally
assembled.

The bottom really is curiously flimsy, though - the cardboard that the red
piece is attached to, which is all (other than the lip) that prevents 1kg of
lens from landing on the pavement, is 0.85mm thick, while the upper part has
three concentric cardboard cylinders, totalling 7.5mm thickness!
