I recently lent my 50mm F/1.0 to a friend, in its original case. I never use
the case myself since I carry this lens in a photopack. He had his fun with
it, and when it came time to return it to me, he picked it up from a table by
the case strap. The bottom dropped out of the case and it went crashing to the
floor! It appears that the glue that held the bottom onto the case just "died"
(http://www.armory.com/~spcecdt/tmp/lenscase.jpg). I really don't think that
this glue (whatever it was) and/or construction method was an acceptable way of
putting together a lens case, particularly for such heavy & expensive lens. Oh
well.
The lens cap was crushed on. We pried it off, and it looked awful with all the
shattered glass from the filter, but after getting rid of that, it doesn't look
so bad. There are tiny shards of glass under the ring that holds the front
element, which at first I thought were broken pieces of the element. That
wouldn't have been surprising with the amount of impact force that was applied
to the ring. But they actually appear to be more like bits wedged in there,
presumably from the filter, though it's a strange place for them to have gotten
to.
It appears to work, but the filter-ring won't come off, and my past experience
with dropping a lens (the 35-350 - similar to my friend; I had gotten home from
a trip on which I used it heavily, without any harm to my equipment, and was
unpacking!) tells me that there's liable to be some non-obvious damage, so I'll
be sending it off soon...
