To Schlake and the group,
Actually, that is an interesting question. Your extras reflect a camping and
climbing background.
I include three essentials in every one of my camera cases: compass (for
determining sun position), multi-purpose knife (scaled to the size of the
case) and very small LED flashlight. When I do location photography, I carry
a real tool case. But when I travel light, the multi-blade knife has to
cover everything. I use the kind with a (tree) saw blade for clearing
foreground brush in outdoor scenics.
There is one other special thing I carry with me at all times (besides a
nail clipper, pen and a few coins), whether I have a camera or not - a synch
cord. My best friend blew a job 35 years ago because all his cords failed. I
have never forgotten that.

I'm curious what people pack into their camera bags that aren't camera
specific.
An easy example is a pen. I'm sure everyone has one in their bag,
right? I almost always have a change of clothes stuffed in the background
bags too. Is that common?
But what about other stuff? For instance, I decided on Saturday after a
rather nasty fingernail tear that a pair of clippers will be making an
appearance in my photo stuff soon.
Some things I've debated making into permanent additions are a
flashlight, sun tan lotion, 160' static line (I already carry
carabiners) and climbing harness, toilet paper and a shovel, and a book
I've never read (any book will do).
