You are right, I mixed the 2 up (I hardly ever use the switch). But how
about the tripod mode? Can anyone confirm that the lens actually switches
off the IS system when it detects it is on a tripod?

The lens detects the presence of the tripod when it is attached to the lens. The instruction manual of my 70 -200mm f 2.8 IS states -

   * /Set the STABILIZER swithch to OFF when you are taking pictures
     with a tripod./

/ -Even if the STABILIZER switch is set to ON, the IS function does not operate because the electronic circuits in the lens automatically detect that a tripod is being used. However, because electrical power is still being supplied to the image stabilizer unit, battery life is roughly 20% shorter than it would be with the swithch set to OFF./
